Led by Xin Fang at the University of South Carolina, with Dr. Yong Fu at Mississippi State University serving as Co-PI, this project develops scalable optimization methods for reliable and economical operation of power systems with high penetrations of inverter-based resources.
The research will build measurement-informed reduced-order dynamic models for grid-following and grid-forming resources, derive analytical constraints that capture small-signal and large-disturbance frequency stability, and integrate those constraints into a parallel alternating-current optimal-power-flow-based unit commitment framework. The resulting tools will co-optimize energy production, operating reserves, and adjustable inverter control parameters while supporting open-source software, educational materials, and workforce development.
